Central California
Winery Architecture

If you decide to base your wine tasting tour on winery architecture, there are many interesting new and historic buildings from which to choose.

Eagle Castle Winery, Paso Robles

Perhaps atop most everyone's list is the Eagle Castle Winery, located just about 2.5 miles west of Highway 101 off Highway 46 West in Paso Robles.

Built to replicate an English castle, it's hard to miss. It was awarded “2007 Structure of the Year” by the California Concrete Association. And if you're a fan of moats, this winery has one of those as well.

I don't know if they included a dungeon, but behave yourself or you may find out the hard way...

The Historic Adobe at Rideau Winery

Historic adobe at Rideau winery

Much more modest, but still interesting in terms of architecture, is the 1880's adobe house at the Rideau winery in Solvang.

Built in 1884, it is one of the few two storey adobe structures built in California. (There is another one in the area - the Rios-Caledonia adobe, just yards away from the Mission San Miguel)

Nicely restored now as a tasting room, it's worth a visit to experience the charm and warmth of adobe.

In addition to the tasting room which was built in the Taos pueblo style of the southwest, this winery also has a B&B. Each of the the five "casitas" (little houses) are done in the same architecture.

It's a pleasant and relaxing winery.
